October 2011 / Wanaka to the World. Wanaka Living, featuring in Air New Zealand's inflight magazine KiaOra.

View PDFBen Wilson, Founder and CEO of luxury home wares company Wanaka Living can tell you the exact moment his brand was born. In Japan on a trip marketing traditional sheepskin products - "lovely fluffy things" - he saw his wares laid out directly alongside a synthetic product and struggled to spot any difference. "We'd over processed and over engineered this natural product to such an extent that it looked perfect - and effectively synthetic."

There's nothing artificial looking about Wanaka Living's range. Made from historically undervalued "curly skins" - at one time, farmers selling such lambs to the works were penalised - the rugs and cushions have all the functional properties of wool, but showcase the material in its original form. "It's all about preserving that natural character in the products, bringing more natural materials into our living spaces." says Wilson, who adds that the product, while sold here, has been designed with European and North American markets in mind. Hence the branding around Wanaka, where the company is based. "We get to enjoy this beautiful place every day, and the idea is that through this range, people offshore can bring a bit of Wanaka into their homes."

There is an Autumn chill in the air, winter is in close proximity, and so is our first New Zealand Wanaka Living shipment, due to arrive this month.

The small team at Wanaka Living is eager to show New Zealand how we've simply turned one of nature's finest materials into something so divine but practical for any living space. Wanaka Living emphasizes chic and sophistication while still allowing people to snuggle up and cozy into nature in its most pure and natural form. To allow people to experience this first hand, we've decided to hold a launch for our collection. This will be an opportunity to see and feel, the luxuriousness and style of our range.

We wanted to launch our first collection where our designs were envisaged and developed based on the picturesque landscape, where it all evolved, Wanaka.

So, just in time for Winter we will be launching Wanaka Living's first collection in association with some of our favourite local business' which serve up delicious food, wine, talented entertainment, and very cool apparel.

We've found the perfect place for such an event, a home which looks out over the mighty Clutha River, and the distinctive Central Otago ranges. Here, on May 26th our launch will take place and the Wanaka Living collection will be displayed in this genuine living environment, so you can see how well our pieces work in a living space.

This is a VIP event, however we do want to give as many people as possible the opportunity to experience our Wanaka Living collection first hand, as well as mingle with the drivers of Wanaka Living and other local business', or even to just meet and socialise with the good people of Wanaka and beyond. So please send us an email if you are interested in coming along to this event. We're always more than happy to embrace someone new.

Wanaka Living completed another successful September 2010 exhibition at Maison & Objet in Paris with designers, specifiers and retailers embracing the Wanaka Living rugs, cushions and stones. Buyers appreciated having natural material to offer in the floor covering and home furnishing category. The objective for the show was to share with buyers the luxurious feel and textural elements of Wanaka Living's products. Wanaka Living received orders from designers based in France, Italy, Russia and even Israel at the show. The added element of giving away New Zealand music on the stand added to the understanding of Wanaka Living, the connection to New Zealand and the beauty of woolskin.   Wanaka living completed a successful January 2010 exhibition at Maison & Objet with designers, specifiers and retailers buying in to the Wanaka living Lounge concept. Buyers were particularly enthusiastic about having something new made from a natural material to offer in the floor covering and home furnishing category. Wanaka living's objective for the show was to allow people to experience the luxurious feel and textural elements of the product in the Wanaka living zone. It did not take much encouragement to get people to lay back on Wanaka living Stones and Lounge rugs and chill out to some great Kiwi sounds. The reaction on people's faces said it all! Lounging at Maison & Objet, January 2010.
